In this blog, lets have a look at When Can You Smoke After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Where it is difficult to heal after a tooth extraction, people who smoke also worry about restraining themselves from smoking. Therefore the question “When can I smoke after wisdom tooth extraction” is very frequently asked. You might not get a clear answer to this question as most healthcare professionals including your dentist will advise you to completely avoid smoking as long as you are completely healed after surgery or treatment.
However, your dentist and oral healthcare professionals are aware that it is difficult to withdraw from nicotine addiction, which could be challenging and many smokers won't be able to quit smoking even after surgery. So to prevent serious consequences, the following are some of the things to keep in mind about smoking after tooth extraction.
Your mouth is usually extra sensitive following a tooth extraction, and since you will have an open wound, a clot (scab) will eventually grow at the extraction site. This clot protects the wound and allows it to heal properly.
However, suction, inhalation, and exhalation of smoke right after extraction will interfere with this clot formation, leading to a severe condition called dry socket.
Therefore it is recommended to avoid smoking especially while you are recovering from wisdom tooth extraction. The healing process after wisdom tooth extraction depends on the tooth's size and the procedure's invasiveness. Larger and more invasive extractions may result in a longer healing process, increasing the risk of developing dry sockets and other complications.
Dentists usually recommend avoide smoke after wisdom tooth extraction and other similar actions, such as using straws, sucking, and spitting, for at least three days, i.e., 72 hours after the extraction of wisdom teeth. During this time, the clot will be formed, and there will be less risk of developing dry sockets and other complications.
However, if you are not able to refrain from smoking, it is advisable to at least wait for the first 24 hours, as you are more sensitive to developing complications during this period.
