Post Operative Instructions for Immediate Denture

Post Operative Instructions for Immediate Denture play a vital role in your comfort and healing after treatment. At HQ Temple Dentist, we make sure you have the right guidance every step of the way. For personalized support, call us at (254) 773-1672.

After the surgery, keep wearing dentures for the whole day (even while sleeping). It acts as a bandage to control bleeding and swelling. But if there is excessive soreness or bleeding, then you can take them off and put the gauze on.

After 24 hours

After 24 hours, remove dentures twice a day as directed by the dentist and wash your mouth with salt water. Simply, take 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water, and wash your mouth with it by gently rinsing. Afterwards, clean the dentures using toothpaste or denture cleaner. Wear the dentures again right after cleaning, as not wearing them for a long time can cause swelling.

Clean your dentures and your mouth regularly to avoid infection. The dentist will later guide you about when you can take the dentures out at night before sleeping. This can be told only by the dentist after seeing the condition. Generally, this will take 1 to 2 weeks.

Post Operative Instructions for Immediate Denture

  • ● Dont be afraid of minor bleeding after the surgery. This can happen for 2 to 3 days after your surgery. When it happens, bite your dentures gently, as it can help in preventing bleeding. But, avoid hard chewing or biting as it can make bleeding worse. If heavy bleeding continues, remove your dentures, put gauze for 1 to 2 hours, and it should help.

  • ● Swelling is normal for the first three days. Gently massage it with an ice pack for 3 to 4 times a day for at least 30 minutes. Afterwards, keep your head elevated when lying down. Generally, swelling can subside within the first week. We might also prescribe medicine that can help with swelling.

  • ● Bruising or discoloration around the face, eyes, or neck is normal.

  • ● Sore throat is also normal and will subside within 2-3 days. It happens because the throat muscles are near the surgical site, which can cause discomfort and a sore throat.

  • ● Use vaseline to keep your lips away from dryness and cracking.

Expect some changes in life as you go through a surgery. You may experience sore spots, weird biting, excessive saliva, and difficulty talking. These issues will be fixed once your mouth muscles are familiar with the dentures. To make them perfectly adjusted, we will call you for further checkups after 1 to 2 days of surgery. In these visits, we will look for the healing progress and make changes in the dentures if required.

About Pain & Infection

We will prescribe painkillers, but even after taking them, you may expect some pain and discomfort. It is recommended to take medicine on time as it works best to minimize pain. If you are experiencing rashes or itching after taking medicines, it means you are allergic to them. Visit us or call us, and we will prescribe a substitute for it.

Diet

It is recommended to stick with a soft diet until the healing process is complete and follow-up visits are done to make further adjustments. During this healing phase, have a soft yet nutritious diet and drink plenty of water. In the diet option, you can ask the dentist or search for some yummy recipes yourself. The key is to avoid food that is hard to bite and will put pressure on the surgical site.

Nausea

Expect some nausea after the surgery. To avoid this, you can take some sips of carbonated drinks. Have tea and eat light food. You can also take Dramamine medicine to prevent nausea.

Can I Smoke?

Avoid smoking and vaping for at least 3rd days after the surgery.

Have Rest

You have gone through surgery. Dont take it lightly, have maximum rest, and avoid the gym or other heavy activities for at least 2 to 3 days after the surgery.
