How is a wisdom tooth cavity treated?

There are several options for treating a wisdom tooth cavity. However, before recommending a treatment, your dentist will first examine your oral cavity through an X-ray. This is important because the treatment of a wisdom tooth cavity depends on factors such as its position, growth, and whether it is impacted. Some of the treatment options include:

• ● Dental Filling: One of the most common solutions for a wisdom tooth cavity is usually a dental filling. The procedure involves filling the decayed tooth with composite or amalgam after removing the decay. However, a dental filling works only when your wisdom tooth is fully erupted and not impacted.


• ● Dental Crowns: To protect the tooth from further damage, a dental crown, or cap, is usually placed over it. Although it is not a cavity treatment, it is usually performed to cover the tooth after a cavity treatment. In most cases, a dental crown is placed after root canal treatment when extensive decay has led to a large section of the tooth being removed during the treatment. The main role of a dental crown is to protect the remaining tooth’s structure and restore its appearance and functionality.


• Removal of wisdom teeth: There is usually an increased risk of infection when the wisdom tooth is impacted and stuck inside the bone of the gum. Since the tooth is not fully grown, bacteria and plaque continue to build up inside the tooth’s root or bone. To prevent infection, a cavity, or pain, an impacted wisdom tooth should be removed, as it does not have enough space to grow fully and, if left, may lead to further complications and dental issues.
