Pros and Cons of Deep Cleaning Teeth

Diet Guide:

While in the healing phase, it's better to pay attention to your diet and eat something that does not put much pressure on the teeth.

  • Eat Soft Foods: Foods that are rich in nutrients and soft to eat can be eaten for 1 to 2 days. Once the healing process is complete, you can switch back to normal eating.

  • Avoid Hot/Cold Beverages: if you are experiencing sensitivity, then better to avoid beverages that feel uncomfortable. It will not directly link with the healing phase disturbance, but it's for you that you will feel uncomfortable.

  • Chew From The Other Side: For the first 24 hours, chew from the opposite side of the fillings. This will allow the filling to settle and prevent pressure from the tooth.

Oral Guide:

Maintaining oral hygiene after the filling helps in preventing tooth decay and keeping the oral health on point.

  • Brushing: Continue your brushing as you do, but use a soft-bristle toothbrush and be light around the filling area. Putting pressure on the filling side can remove the filling.

  • Flossing: Flossing will also contribute to oral hygiene overall, but be careful around the filling side. Once the filling is set in place after a few days, you can continue using it the way you did before.

  • Mouthwash: You can use mouthwash, but with the same guidelines: avoid vigorous rinsing, as it can dislodge the filling. However, warm water with salt can be a good option for treating gum irritation.

Numbness

If local anesthesia was used to numb the area during filling, then you might feel numbness for some hours after the treatment. It's better to avoid until the anesthesia effect wears off, as if you try to eat during this period, you can accidentally bite with pressure on the fillings. Or, even bite your cheeks, lips, or tongue. To Avoid that:

  • Sensitivity After Treatment: if the filling area feels sensitive after touching, dont worry about it as it's normal and will subside on its own. However, if you feel an increase in sensitivity and it is not getting better over time. Then, it's good to visit us.

Temporary Fillings Vs Permanent Fillings

If you had a temporary filling, you can start eating after 1 But, but if you had permanent fillings, eating times can depend on it. In composite white fillings, you can start immediately once the numbness from anesthesia wears off. But, for amalgam, you should wait for 24 hours to start chewing from the filling side.

What to Avoid

After the procedure, there are a few things you should avoid to prevent complications and proper healing.

  • Don't Smoke: To avoid delayed healing and further complication it is advised to quit smoking. After filling it is recommended to avoid products containing tobacco for at least 48 hours.

  • Avoid Chewing hard foods: Avoid chewing hard foods like ice, nuts, or raw vegetables if the teeth that are used for chewing such as molar teeth have undergone filling as it can cause unnecessary stress on the filling.

  • Do not Use your teeth as tool: To prevent damage to the filling or crack in your teeth it is recommended to avoid using your teeth to open packaging or biting hard objects like pens.
