Post Operative Instructions For Complete Dentures

  • ● During your visit, to make sure that you are comfortable, we make some minor adjustments to your dentures before you leave.

  • ● Since you have to wear the dentures for 24 hours, we selectively reduce the side surface of the denture to make sure it does not leave marks on your gums. However, if you do not have an appointment the next day, then remove the dentures at night. Rewear the dentures for 24hours before the next appointment.

  • ● In this way, we will only remove the material where it is necessary. The less the material is reduced the more it fixes to the gum. Which will improve its retention.

  • ● The number of adjustments required varies for each patient, though most need only one to three visits. Since it takes time for your mouth to adapt to the dentures, we recommend wearing them for at least five days before returning. Remember, the less material we remove, the better your dentures will fit.

When your Dentures are Adjusted:

  • ● Your oral muscles will need some time to get used to the new dentures. If this is your first set, you may need extra practice with speaking and eating. Even if it’s not your first time, it will still take a while to get accustomed to them.

  • ● Your mouth will need some time to get adjusted to the new dentures, so do not compare the new dentures with the old ones.

  • ● To train your muscles faster, you can use a little adhesive, if needed.

  • ● Remember, implants are used to help retain your dentures. First, the implants are placed, and then the dentures are fitted onto them. Using implants works well in improving denture retention.

How to Take Care of Your Dentures:

  • ● Take your dentures out every night. To clean them use a wet toothbrush, this will clean any debris left in the denture.

  • ● In order to eliminate bacterial growth and to improve blood flow to the gums, it is advised to gently brush your gums.

  • ● To store your dentures, use a glass or a container filled with a solution of water and a teaspoon of baking soda.

  • ● Using baking soda to clean your dentures is a chemical-free and gentle solution; however, you can also use the denture cleaners that are available in the market.

  • ● To prevent the dentures from drying, it is advised to keep them soaked in water overnight. Dentures that are dehydrated are easier to crack and break.

  • ● It is recommended to visit every year for an oral exam, denture check, and screening for oral cancer.
