Post Operative Instructions For Frenectomy

Until the anesthesia effect is present, it's better not to have anything as because of the effect you will not feel your tongue, cheeks, or lips. So, you might accidentally bite and hurt yourself. Once the effect goes away, take a painkiller instantly to avoid pain or discomfort.

Medicine Guide:

You can take ibuprofen (Advil) 800mg every 4-6 hours for pain after surgery. The maximum recommended dose of Advil is 2400mg, don't exceed even if you have pain.

However, it is required the medicine as directed by your physician even you don't have pain. For a better analgesic effect you can switch to Extra strength Tylenol instead of Ibuprofen. The dose of extra strength Tylenol for pain relief is 2 tablets i.e. 1000mg every 4-6 hourly for 3-5 days.

However, it is not recommended to Tylenol more than 4000mg i.e. 8 tablets in a day. Note: Whether you are in pain or not, it is important to take the medications as prescribed, don't increase or skip your dose without your dentist's advise.

It is advised to take only tablet of extra strength Tylenol (half of the recommended dose) if you are take Vicodin, Tylenol #3 , Percocet, or Tramadol. As these medicine already contain Tylenol.

If over the counter analgesic medications are unable to control pain, you can get strong pain killer that is prescribed by your dentist from any over the counter pharmacy. However, if they are too strong, take only half of the tablet. Avoid driving or using heavy machinery as these medications may cause drowsiness. It is recommended not to take pain killers n an empty stomach.

To prevent infection, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics, however, it is highly recommended to take them exactly as directed for the specified period.

Expect Some Discomfort & How to Relieve it

Expect some uncomfortable after the procedure, especially in the first few days or weeks. The common side effects include swelling, increased sensitivity & mild bruising. Here are one-by-one help in reliving these problems

Minimizing Swelling:

  • ● To minimize swelling, do cold and hot compression. For the first 2 days, do ice compression on the surgical site. Place it gently till you are comfortable. Do this 4 to 5 times a day. And, after 2 days, stop ice compression and do the same with hot compression. Switching between ice and cold will be helpful in minimizing swelling.

  • ● Dont lie flat, but use 2 pillows to keep your head elevated above the heart level.

  • ● Swelling will last for 3 to 4 days and will get better after that. But, if it's not getting better or increasing, contact us.

Tips for Minimizing Tooth Sensitivity

  • ● Since your gums are exposed and in the healing stages, they can get sensitive, and it's a natural thing. And, will get better with time. If it's not getting better or worse, and you contact us, we will prescribe something for it.

  • ● Maintain oral hygiene by following the method below. It will help minimize sensitivity and keep your teeth protected from plaque.

For Upper Denture

  • ● If you were given upper dentures, then do not remove them at any cost, even it filled with blood. Just clean it with Chlorhexidine or lukewarm water, but dont take them out.

  • ● After 24 hours, remove for the meals only or do what the dentist says.

Dressing

We will place a periodontal surgical dressing to protect the wound area, reducing pain and discomfort. It will get hard in an hour max and will be in the mouth for 2 weeks. Eat from the opposite side and dont brush this side to keep the dressing in place, and we will change it by the next appointment.

Dont try to reposition yourself if it's loose or out. Contact us instead.

Bleeding

Light bleeding is normal after the procedure; you might get a taste of blood, as it will mix with your saliva, and you can swallow it, but dont spit again and again. Avoid heavy workouts or anything that will put pressure on the face to avoid excessive bleeding.

Furthermore, dont check it again and again or show someone else, as it can disturb the healing and cause bleeding. If heavy bleeding, press the gauze pad gently for half an hour and and if it's not in control, contact us.

Diet Guide:

  • ● Have a soft diet for 5 to 7 days. For the first 2 days, have liquid foods (like yogurt, soups, mashed potatoes or smoothies). After 2-3 days have semi-soft foods (like scrambled eggs, pasta, or soft rice) if there’s no discomfort. After a week, if there is no swelling or pain you can continue back to normal eating.

  • ● Avoid hard, crunchy, chewy, spicy and hot foods as they can irritate the surgical site and delay healing.

  • ● Avoid alcohol, beer or wine even smoking, till the next visit. If smoking seems difficult to stop, then you have nicotine patches.

Oral Hygiene Guide

Continue your regular oral hygiene routine for the areas that were not treated. However, for the surgical area, brush gently only on the biting surface to keep it clean without disturbing the wound.

After every meal, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Avoid forceful rinsing or spitting, as it may disturb the surgical site and delay recovery.

Use Periogard, Peridex, or Chlorhexidine mouth rinse twice a day. once in the morning and once before sleep. Avoid eating or drinking after it for at least 30 minutes to allow it to work properly.

For the treated area, you may use a soft Q-tip or cotton swab with a small amount of toothpaste to gently clean the teeth. Avoid brushing or flossing around the surgical area until it has completely healed.

Avoid

  • ● Avoid touching the surgical site with your fingers or tongue.
  • ● Do not pull your lips to check the area repeatedly
  • ● Avoid straws, as suction can disturb the blood clot and delay healing.
  • ● Avoid very hot or cold foods; you can have a milkshake using a spoon instead.
  • ● Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking until your next appointment.
  • ● Sleep on the opposite side
  • ● Avoid heavy workouts or strenuous activities for a few days.
  • ● Relax and maintain good oral hygiene.
