Post Operative Instructions for Sinus Lift

The whole process helps rebuild the bone in the back part of the upper jaw. The whole process is important as it allows the dentist to place the implants now, as it was not possible before due to bone loss or an enlarged sinus.

The bone that will be used for grafting can have a mixture of multiple sources. It can be artificial bone, freeze-dried bone, or sometimes your own bone as well. You may have 2 healing areas if your bone is used. One where the bone was taken from and one where it was placed.

Alert: Do not blow your nose or pinch it to stop a sneeze for at least 4 weeks (or longer if your doctor advises). You can sniff gently, but avoid forceful nose blowing.

Avoid the following:

  • ● Don’t pinch your nose or stop yourself from sneezing.
  • ● Avoid sneezing when the mouth is open
  • ● Avoid straws and spitting.
  • ● Anything that will put pressure on the sinuses. It can include activities like riding a bike fast without a helmet, SCUBA diving, or flying from an aircraft and furthermore, lifting heavy objects, blowing balloons, and playing instruments. These can affect healing.
  • ● Avoid smoking at all, but if nessary, use nicotine patches.

You can use OTC medicines like Decongestants like Drixoral®, Dimetapp®, or Sudafed® to relieve pressure from the sinuses. If we have prescribed antibiotics, take them as directed.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is essential to prevent any sort of infection and help with the healing. And, maintaining oral hygiene is easy. Use a warm glass of water and add half a teaspoon of salt to it for rinsing. Do this 4 to 5 times a day, after a meal, specifically for a week after the procedure.

You can continue brushing after the 2 days of the procedure, and when starting back, be careful on the surgical site and avoid hard spitting.

Depending upon your conditions, we will prescribe mouth rinses. If prescribed, use it 2 times a day, one in the morning and one before sleeping. Also, once used, try not to eat or drink anything after it. And, using it more than 2 times a day can be problematic and stain your teeth.

After the procedure, the blood can mix with your saliva, and you can have a blood taste, but it's okay to swallow it, to avoid spitting

Smoking

It's best not to smoke after the procedures at all, as it is the major culprit of dental issues. But you can't stop smoking at all, so stop it for 2 weeks after the procedure. Using nicotine patches to avoid the urge to smoke.

Wearing Prosthesis or Nightguards

If you have ever worn dentures or flippers, it is recommended to do it after your post-surgery checkup or when your dentist will ask you to wear them.

Temporary flippers should be removed before surgery and should be worn until the anesthesia effect reduces. In case if you are wearing it it is recommended to make sure it does not touch the surgical site.
